Shopping spree on Diwali

For Bangalore's business community, there is no happier time of the year than Deepavali. With discounts and gifts galore, it’s not a bad time to be a consumer either.

On Dhanteras, DNA’s A Veeramani and Rakesh Ravindran visit stores selling gold and diamond jewellery, roadside vendors doing brisk business in roli and diyas and those piled high with shiny silver and steel utensils, and come back convinced that the economy is, indeed, booming.

Posh and Becks get it on

Not one to shy away from PDAs, Victoria and David Beckham's latest fragrance collaboration campaign is intimate to say the least. The advertisement — which sees the lovebirds get it on in a glass elevator — is for their latest his-and-hers scent, Intimately Yours.

David gets Posh's red lipstick on his collar and loses a bowtie in the process. But Posh (as always) comes out of the lip-lock looking polished.

A vivid new Daisy by Marc Jacobs

Last week Marc Jacobs showcased two traffic-stopping collections at New York Fashion Week and now the fashion designer has unveiled his latest masterpiece. Jacobs has bottled up his love of art with a pop art limited edition of his popular women's scent, Daisy by Marc Jacobs.

Jacobs took a trip down memory lane with a ripe collection of colourful '70s-inspired styles on the New York runway. Vivid colour palettes, nipped-in waistlines, long and lean dresses, headscarves and flamboyant wide-legged pants teamed with voluminous, off-the-shoulder tops are all swinging in for 2011. And this red-hot collectable bottle of perfume is the perfect escort for the doll collection.

The fragrance is a richer take on the original eau de toilette, Daisy, with a sweet punch of wild strawberry and blossoming notes of violet petals, gardenia and jasmine.

The Best Of Spring 2010 Italian Fashion PART 2

sportcoats
Armani Collezioni Striped Linen Blazer
Italians aren’t terribly fond of traditional seersucker, so Armani has reinterpreted this must-have material in summery striped linen. It reads like the original but has all of the markings of Milanese style with a rolled lapel and patch pockets.

Retail price: $595

Etro Plaid Seersucker Blazer
Etro is known for its luxuriously loud looks, and this brown plaid blazer is no exception. The pattern may remind you of grandpa’s stodgy sportcoat, but the crisper cut with side vents shaves a half-century off its age. The slightly shrunken length doesn’t hurt either.

Retail price: $1390

Sisley Wool Jacket
A wool sportcoat in warmer weather immediately triggers thoughts of sweating on the way to work. But Benetton – Italy’s answer to mass retailing – is keeping things cool with a lighter version of the blue blazer from its higher-end label, Sisley. Fortunaely, just like its pricier peers, this one too has the trimmer traits of an Italian masterpiece.

shoes
Salvatore Ferragamo Parigi Loafer

Orange can be awful when it’s done wrong, but everything is right
about this loafer from footwear phenom Ferragamo. The brightness is balanced by classic contrast topstitching, signature silver hardware and a practical rubber driving sole that will keep it in your closet for seasons to come.

Retail price: $475

Moreschi Solido – 38280
Moreschi isn’t on the short list of usual shoe suspects, but this cap toe is worth mentioning. Woven and punched detailing together would normally be brutal battery on the eyes, but it’s executed in a graceful way that’s both refined and relevant.

Retail price: $417

sunglasses
Bottega Veneta Dark Havana Evergreen Sunglasses
Bottega Veneta has made a name for itself by subtly nodding to rather than aggressively affirming trends. However, the luxe label is more than prudent wallets. These half-rim Havana shades in dark tortoise acetate are likewise a prime example of the timeless style upon which BV has built its regal reputation.

Retail price: $495

The Best Of Spring 2010 Italian Fashion PART 1

Now that 2010 is in full swing, and you’ve (hopefully) kicked the habit of misdating things, the time has come to preview the best in men's fashion from its undisputed birthplace: Italy. What is it about Italy, or old-world Italy to be precise, that has captured our attention? The excess, the women, the sophisticated masculinity of times past. Check.
AM predicts that an Italian cultural revival will be a major theme across the board for 2010. And the first stop? Men's fashion.

The Italian designers' collections for spring 2010 come with a premium price tag, but those of us who traded in Cristal and caviar for box wine with chips and dip on New Year’s Eve can still find helpful hints here. In case you freak out over the prices, we’ll tell you how to get the look for less in an upcoming article. For now, focus on the real deal with a sampling of styles to turn a winter that’s frightful into a spring that’s bound to be oh-so-delightful.

shirts
Dsquared2 Poplin Shirt
Duo Dean and Dan Caten (think equally odd but older male counterparts of the Olsen twins) hail from Canada but design in their ancestral home of Italy. This poplin shirt quietly ushers in spring with brown gingham and retains the signature sensibilities of Italian style -- namely, its impeccable slim tailoring.

Retail price: $420
Availability: Dsquared2.com

Loro Piana Cardigan
Tough times have led labels to focus on their forte. And when it comes to wools, no one does it better than Loro Piana. This cardigan in burnt orange can be used as a lighter layering piece to provide the perfect passage between the seasons. Tip: The Italians aren't afraid of color, why should you be?

pants
Gucci Sport Pant
Tom Ford took Gucci from bankrupt to billion-dollar brand during his legendary reign, and the label has remained fun and fresh ever since. These white pants are ready to ring in spring with all of the distinctive details that make Gucci great: crisp construction, back flap pockets and contrast trimming.

Retail price: $450
Availability: Gucci.com

jackets
Versace Zip Blouson
The hallmarks of Versace menswear have long been boldness and bling. But this lightweight zip-up jacket is on trend in its understated elegance. The traditionally blousy jacket has a trimmer, contemporary cut here that’s complemented with oversized slit pockets.

Smell Good this Year :Men's Colognes 2010

office
Our men’s colognes for 2010 begin with options for the office. Wearing cologne at the office, however, must always be done with care and attention. No one should ever smell you from down the hall let alone when they walk past the coffee machine 20 minutes after you’ve left. Be aware that some coworkers may be allergic to scents, and customers or clients often find it off-putting to deal with a scent instead of a person. Thus, focus on strategically placing small amounts of cologne just underneath your shirt collar and around your neck.

Tom Ford Grey Vetiver
Grapefruit citrus blends with pimento, moss, nutmeg, and, of course, vetiver. A number of the most intriguing colognes for 2010 include vetiver, which is a fragrant scent derived from the root of the perennial cuscus grass indigenous to India and Malaysia.

What all this means is that Tom Ford has once again redefined what a man should smell like. Grey Vetiver is perfect for the office because upon first notice it starts out as a citrus scent but, as the day progresses, it slowly smolders against your skin as the nutmeg and moss bottom notes come through with subtle revelations to enhance your stature. And don’t worry, you won’t smell like a grapefruit.

Price: $85 at Sephora.com

Kenneth Cole Vintage Black
This new urban, masculine cologne has the top notes of pink grapefruit and lime that soon give way to dewy greens, hints of white pepper, tequila (yup, tequila), lavender, and, finally, oak with sandalwood thrown in for good measure. All of this conspires to become the perfect international business cologne for any man; while the top notes are citrus-based and the bottom notes are wood, there is no lag time in their confluence on your skin. The mixture of Kenneth Cole Vintage Black hits your senses all at once making it a masculine, powerful scent that should always travel with you -- but apply it sparsely.

Price: $67.50 at Zappos.com

date night
Wearing cologne in the evening naturally has different rules of application. While you still want to add a touch or two around your neck and jaw line (allowing her a gentle whiff every now and then), you will also need to apply a little down the center of your torso. And if you’re feeling confident, you’ll want to add a dash along the inside of each leg before dressing and a small dab just below the waist line. These lower areas, however, naturally emit your own pheromones, so, add the following colognes lightly and carefully.

Davidoff Hot Water
Patchouli and the unique use of red basil and absinthe converge with pimento creating the complete antithesis of Davidoff’s popular Cool Water scent. Hot Water makes quick use of patchouli, which is the perfect date-night top note for a men’s cologne. OK, so what the hell is Patchouli? It is a warmly scented oil derived from an Indo-Malayan shrub. In its natural form, the oil has the aroma of heat. Blended here with basil and pimento one gets an unusually masculine and primal scent reminiscent of a man’s natural scent (i.e., she digs that).

Price: Approximately $52 at Amazon.com

Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit De L'Homme
Vetiver and cedar wood ride over a mixture of bergamot, lavender and cardamom revealing an earthiness not often found in men’s colognes. This is a result of the top notes of vetiver and cedar giving way to the airy citrus aroma of bergamot. Bergamot is culled from the northern Italian citrus tree of the same name. The tree produces a small orange-like fruit that has been a staple of colognes for years. Used here, however, it provides a gentler and less overpowering scent for intimate moments, but still provides you with a strong masculine presence.

Price: $43 at Sephora.com
formal event and sport
Our list of men’s colognes for 2010 continues with an option for formal events because, hey, sometimes you need to make the extra effort. Any formal occasion deserves its own cologne for the simple reason that you are not doing serious business nor are you out on the prowl. You are, in a sense, rising above all of your daily pursuits. Thus, you want a cologne neither subtle and masculine nor strong and sexual. You want a refined scent befitting the setting and your attire.
Canali Men
Canali succeeds in enhancing your formal wear with its inconspicuousness. One is hard-pressed to clearly identify individual ingredients that add both mystery and fascination. Floral and citrus top notes of clementine, pineapple, bergamot, orange flower, and lily blend easily with jasmine, coriander and nutmeg spices creating a postmodern sophistication. Yet, apply Canali Men carefully along your neck and upper torso for a balanced
Lanvin L'Homme Sport
Unwavering in its manliness and sheer power, L’Homme Sport by Lanvin is the singular sport and casual scent for the Everyman in 2010. The weighty notes of musk, pepper and sage overlay bergamot and patchouli. Translation? Your significant other will first notice the animalistic aroma of musk. As she gets closer, the subtle fragrant notes of the bergamot fruit and patchouli oil warm and console her senses with their blend of citrus and floral aromas.

Price: Approximately $42 at Amazon.com

Wearing cologne often gets monotonous; however, each men’s cologne recommended for 2010 has a quality specifically suited to an occasion or pursuit that is sure to enhance your daily life. The single most important rule of cologne is to change your scent as you change your clothing for different aspects of your life.
